Description

A Principal Systems Engineer (Software) is sought to bridge systems engineering and software development for aerospace and defence products. The role covers requirements definition, architectural design of software systems, integration, testing and root-cause analysis for mission-critical tools, including self-protection systems for RAF Typhoon and Apache aircraft and next-generation tools for the Tempest programme (GCAP). It requires experience delivering software-heavy systems, ideally in regulated industries, plus MBSE/UML and systems engineering lifecycle knowledge. The position is based on-site in Luton, subject to UK security clearance, with hybrid working options and a comprehensive benefits package.

Responsibilities

Engage with stakeholders to define requirements for new systems and software designs
Perform architectural design of software systems
Conduct cost and functional performance trade-offs and evaluation of proposed solutions
Enhance capabilities and performance of in-service systems
Design and integrate new functionality into existing systems and with external software systems
Design and conduct testing and trials to prove equipment function and performance
Perform root-cause analysis of anomalies, issues and faults observed during operation, integration or evaluation activities
Lead technical activities and initiatives
Mentor and coach other engineers
Create and deliver technical reports, presentations and proposals to customers and industry partners
Support knowledge sharing and exploitation of software and systems best practice

Requirements

A science, maths or engineering-based degree, or equivalent experience
Proven experience delivering software-heavy systems, ideally to customers in regulated industries such as military, rail or safety-critical
Experience working with software teams using DevOps to deliver products
Experience in MBSE methodologies or modelling languages such as UML
Knowledge of software technologies, architectures, design principles and testing
Experience with functional architectures, development lifecycles and toolsets
Knowledge of the systems engineering lifecycle: problem definition, systems and software architecture, software development and qualification, integration, verification and validation
