Description

Version 1 is a 30-year-old international IT consulting firm and certified Great Place to Work. The Test Engineer role focuses on Java-based test automation within agile delivery teams, building automation frameworks from scratch, delivering cross-layer test coverage, and integrating tests into CI/CD pipelines. The position requires UK residency of 5+ years or existing SC Security Clearance. The company offers a quarterly profit share scheme, comprehensive benefits, and professional development support.

Responsibilities

Designing, building, and maintaining Java-based automation frameworks from the ground up as structured, reusable, and version-controlled code
Delivering automated test coverage across functional, cross-browser, API, integration, and acceptance testing with overnight regression runs
Building and extending API test suites using Karate or REST-assured, validating service contracts, data integrity, and integration behaviour
Defining and executing test strategies, plans, and scripts across agile delivery cycles with clear traceability from requirements to coverage
Supporting development teams to write and automate tests including test-driven and behaviour-driven approaches
Performing front-end cross-browser functional testing, exploratory testing, system integration testing, and user acceptance testing
Accurate defect recording, monitoring, and root cause analysis feeding quality data back into the team
Reviewing and improving test environments, CI/CD pipeline integration, and test processes across the delivery lifecycle
Providing test estimates and contributing to planning sessions with realistic evidence-based views of testing effort

Requirements

Strong, demonstrable Java skills — ability to build, review, and own Java-based test automation frameworks
Proven experience designing and implementing automation frameworks using Java with tools such as Selenium, Playwright, Cypress, or Karate
Solid experience delivering automated test coverage across functional, cross-browser, API, integration, and acceptance testing layers
Practical experience with API testing using Java-based frameworks including contract tests, authentication flows, and data validation
Comfortable working across both automated and manual testing disciplines with good judgment on when to automate
Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines and maintaining quality gates
Worked in agile or scrum delivery environments with understanding of how testing fits within sprints
Clear communication skills with ability to report test progress, coverage gaps, and defect trends to technical and non-technical stakeholders
Resident in the UK for five or more years with no more than 30 days per year out of the UK, or currently holding Security Clearance
