Description

A digital rehabilitation platform for clinics and hospitals is entering its next growth phase, progressing towards medical-device obligations and expanding AI-enabled ways of working. The company is hiring a CTO to own Technology and Engineering at C-level, reporting to the CEO and working as a peer to the CPO. The role owns technology strategy, engineering leadership, architecture, security, reliability, budget and regulated development for critical clinical workflows. The position is remote-first within Germany with regular in-person leadership in Berlin.

Responsibilities

Translate company and product strategy into a technology strategy with clear capabilities, investments, risks and measurable 18-month proof points
Lead all Engineering teams and Engineering leads, including Platform, Infrastructure, DevOps/SRE, developer experience and Engineering-owned quality automation
Build a strong leadership layer with clear domain ownership, distributed knowledge and no single-person dependencies
Own architecture, technology choices, reliability, security implementation, technical evidence and regulated development for critical clinic and hospital workflows
Keep the organization ready for deep technical scrutiny with current architecture and ownership evidence, demonstrable IP ownership and auditable security and compliance evidence
Own the incident system and lead major or trust-critical escalations without being the standing first-line on-call engineer, ensuring postmortem actions are completed and verified
Plan Engineering budget and capacity, deciding within the approved envelope on technology, vendors and build, buy or outsource options including lifecycle cost and continuity
Shape AI-enabled Engineering through current personal practice, creating measurable leverage without weakening security, maintainability, review quality, traceability or regulated assurance
Make credible commitments with Product, owning technical feasibility, capacity and release readiness and stopping unsupported or unsafe commitments
Involve Medical, Quality, Information Security, Privacy and Legal early, turning requirements into reusable controls, tests and evidence
Establish clear data contracts with Data, with Technology owning production and operational data systems
Represent the company in high-stakes technical discussions with clinics, hospital IT, integration partners, auditors, investors and the board
Complete a deep external technical review at customer, auditor or investor standard with no unresolved material findings
Improve delivery predictability, release quality, resilience and regulated evidence
Make cooperation between Engineering, Infrastructure and independent Security durable and effective

Requirements

Managed multiple Engineering leaders and led a multi-team organization through a meaningful scale or rigor transition
Owned technology strategy, budget, capacity and build, buy or outsource decisions at executive level with evidence of their impact
Led Engineering in regulated, security-critical or high-availability systems; medical-device or digital-health experience is a plus, not a prerequisite
Built and scaled cloud-SaaS products, ideally in a regulated environment
Broad systems depth across backend services, web and mobile clients, APIs and integrations, data flows, observability, security and operations
Currently works hands-on with agentic development workflows and can show how AI output was used, constrained or rejected and made to scale
Shipped products that achieved meaningful customer and business outcomes with product judgement and pace, not only engineering rigor
Builds trust with teams, customers, partners, auditors, investors and boards without acting as a rescuer or creating dependence on yourself
Business-fluent in German and English

Conditions

Position must be performed while living in Germany starting on the first day of work
Remote-first within Germany with flexible working hours
Regular in-person leadership in Berlin is part of the role with no fixed weekly office quota
Virtual equity package (VSOP) with meaningful participation in the company's value growth
30 vacation days, home-office allowance and meal subsidy
Budget for learning, conferences and coaching
High level of ownership and decision-making freedom with no micromanagement
Access to mental and physical well-being offerings
No university degree or fixed number of years required; demonstrated impact and responsibility are what matters
