Description

algo1 is building an AI-native product that reimagines the in-store grocery trip, backed by leading investors and staffed with frontier AI researchers and retail operators. The Product Designer reports to the Head of Design and shapes the interfaces, interactions and systems that millions of shoppers will use in-store. The work spans digital interfaces, physical environments and human behaviour, taking ideas from first concept to shipped screens and validating them with real shoppers. This is a greenfield product: nothing is inherited, so the designer defines how the product looks, feels and works, including the design system, motion and prototyping practice.

Responsibilities

Own the shopper experience end-to-end, from first sketch to shipped interface
Turn complex user problems into elegant, intuitive flows usable in a store while distracted
Prototype relentlessly to answer difficult product questions before code is written
Set the bar for typography, layout, hierarchy and detail on the design side
Evolve design system components, tokens, patterns and documentation so the team ships consistently
Use motion and micro-interactions intentionally to guide attention and provide feedback
Observe real shoppers in real stores and iterate on designs based on what you see
Work with the Head of Design and the Product and Engineering teams on interfaces, interactions and systems

Requirements

Track record of designing and shipping digital products customers use regularly, with a portfolio showing sharp UX thinking and exceptional visual detail
Meaningful animation and interaction design experience, with judgement about when motion improves clarity
Ability to take complex user journeys and reduce them to something that feels obvious in hindsight
Experience building or meaningfully evolving a design system that engineering teams actually adopted, including Tokens Studio and design-to-code workflows
High proficiency with Figma and modern prototyping tools, knowing when a static frame or a working prototype is needed
Designing for accessibility across visual, motor and cognitive differences as part of the craft
At least 4+ years of product design experience
Daily use of frontier AI tools to explore concepts, generate options and prototype faster
Nice to have: experience contributing to brand systems, visual identity or design leadership
Nice to have: background designing AI-powered, consumer-facing or retail technology products
Nice to have: ethnographic or observational research in real-world environments
Nice to have: experience working at an early-stage startup
